A Little About Me

I'm Mervi, a 28 year-old kid-at-heart who loves an adventure. I'm originally from a small-town near the west coast of Finland but I've always had the urge to travel and see the world. So after high-school I've spent most of my time living abroad exploring the world and making memories. I've studied international business in the Netherlands and did a one-year internship in a Sydney based PR company in Australia. But since 2008, I've stayed put in the capital of Finland, Helsinki. I spend my days working in a creative agency as a project manager and at nights I tune into my freelance design work and writing my blog My Best Friend Jules.

I started doing freelance graphic design in February 2011 and the last months have been so teaching and empowering. It took me a couple of design courses and contemplative years to realize that I can actually do it professionally and now I feel very blessed being able to create something every day. I'm a strong believer that if you loose the fear of unknown, your options are limitless. And now that I've joined the amazingly talented and inspiring Freckled Nest Design team, the theory has been proved.

For fun I relax outdoors, taking long walks with my dog and exploring the streets of Helsinki. But I won't leave the house without my camera. Photography has become a way of documenting my life and keeping a visual diary. You can also spot me hunting vintage treasures at the local thrift shops or finding new gems for my jewelry box. I'm pretty passionate about my pretties.

My Design Style

I've been raised admiring the simple and functional Scandinavian design and this definitely comes through in my design work. My aesthetic is all about light and airy layouts with fresh color combos, yummy fonts and clear navigation. With that said, I also love bold prints, textures and colorful patterns. With the right balance, a good design work can have both - a hint of unexpected mixed with clean simplicity.

My design rule number one is, that I want to create a space where my client and their readers love coming back to. A place that portrays my client's personality and the soul of their business. Therefore, I love getting to know my clients and involving them in the design process as much as possible. I treat each design project as my own baby and before they're released to the world, they're all applied some tender-loving-care.

I seek inspiration in the little ordinary things. Quirky and cute daily objects that evoke conversation often tickle my fancy. My love of everything vintage also sparks inspiration because each object has its own unique story to unravel. In a nutshell, I'd describe my design style modern with a retro twist.
